Research Brings New Hope for Mesothelioma Patients

In New York, the family of a merchant marine who died of malignant mesothelioma caused by exposure to asbestos has won the right to sue Chevron.
In New Jersey, a man suffering malignant mesothelioma is suing Johnson & Johnson for failing to keep their talc-based baby powder – which he regularly used – from being contaminated with asbestos.
And in Washington, DC, the Supreme Court has ruled that manufacturers have a duty to warn about the potential dangers of parts containing asbestos in a case which started with a suit by two Navy veterans, both of whom developed cancer.

The link between mesothelioma and asbestos is impossible to ignore. In thousands of lawsuits nationwide, our clients and many others diagnosed with cancer caused by asbestos exposure charge that employers like Chevron and manufacturers like Johnson & Johnson ignored repeated warnings about asbestos.

Thinking Outside the Box: Inhalable Cancer Treatment
There is, however, some good news for those suffering from the effects of asbestos exposure. Because mesothelioma is so difficult to treat, cancer researchers are thinking outside the box to find better methods of treatment. One of the most promising approaches is a new medication that relies on inhaling “messenger RNA molecules.”
RNA, which stands for ribonucleic acid, is present in all living cells. It acts as a messenger, carrying instructions for controlling protein synthesis. MIT researchers recognized that messenger RNA molecules would be highly effective in delivering genetic instructions to the lung’s cells to fight back against cancer.
Developing a formula containing messenger RNA molecules, the researchers then took their work a step further. They believed that inhaling their new formula would be a more effective way of ensuring that the drug would be fully delivered to the lungs and would have the maximum possible impact.
After testing their inhalable treatment on laboratory mice, the researchers concluded they were right. It was highly effective in treating not just mesothelioma, but all types of lung cancer. This development potentially could be a game-changer in treating individuals suffering from mesothelioma.
